Mapdwell announced today the launch of Solar System for Boston, Mass., in partnership with the City of Boston – through its Department of Environment, Energy, and Open Space – to provide the entire Boston community with the most advanced solar decision-making tool available today. The strategic alliance brings actionable information for solar PV opportunities to home- and business-owners, building managers, installers, and other industry stakeholders.

Conceived as a public good, Solar System is Mapdwell’s open, online, interactive, and user-oriented tool for rooftop solar photovoltaic remote assessment and cost-benefit analysis. It is based on state-of-the-art technology licensed from M.I.T. and delivered though strategic partnerships seeking to amplify the impact of collective sustainability through awareness, education, and community engagement. Covering over 125,000 building structures, the project identified 2,271 Megawatts of potential high-yield photovoltaic capacity capable of delivering 2,132,000 Megawatt-hours per year. This is enough clean, renewable energy to power 200,000 American households, create over $10 billion in local business, and offset carbon emissions equivalent to planting over 37 million trees.

Solar System has now precisely identified more than 5 square miles of rooftop area in Boston that bears high-yield solar potential. The project should be instrumental for achieving the 25% greenhouse gas emission reduction the City has set as a goal for 2020 and dovetails into Greenovate Boston, a community-driven movement looking to “enable people to take simple steps that will make the City a better, greener place to live and work.” With Solar System, the City provides Bostonians with an effective model for crowdsourcing the clean energy economy and creating value through distributed generation.

Mapdwell is proud to take part in the larger sustainability action plan for Boston, ranked as the “Most Energy-Efficient City in the United States” by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).
